Breathwork allows us to tap into the wisdom of our body, mind, and soul.

Exploring the breath can shift our conscious thought from the thinker-doer mind to a deeper, soul-led experience.

What is breathwork?

One of the greatest healing devices available to us is also one of the most accessible — the breath! I am trained in a style of breathwork called Be Free Breathwork, which is in the family of holotropic breathwork practices, developed by psychologist Stanislav Grof. Holotropic means “moving toward wholeness.”

In this style of breathwork, we use a deep, cyclical breathing pattern to enter an altered state of consciousness. The high oxygen levels produce physiological changes in the brain and nervous system, which allow us to activate our stress response. In this state, we can bring to the surface things we’ve locked away or disassociated from that need our attention.

Along with the breath itself, my breathwork journeys utilize a blindfold and specially curated (loud!) playlist to create a container in which you feel safe to explore your internal landscape without the distraction of the external world.

What happens in a breathwork session?

A breathwork session — whether private or in a group — always begins with a grounding meditation to help the nervous system begin to drop into the experience. Then I invite a check-in, where you can share what’s on your heart and set an intention for the session. I’ll discuss the “how to” of the breathwork journey — how to breathe, what you might experience, and the variety of tools you can use to activate, regulate, deepen, or soften your process.

Then we move into the breathwork portion, which lasts about an hour. When the journey is complete, you’ll have some quiet time to journal or draw to help integrate your experience. We’ll have another check-in, and I’ll give some aftercare instructions and provide information about how to receive additional support if needed.

These breathwork sessions offer a chance for deep inner exploration. You are able to confront and release stress and trauma in a facilitated environment, allowing you to meet and heal parts of yourself that haven’t been nurtured. This practice helps break old patterns by exploring your body, emotions, and triggers in a supported space.

Re+Center: A mini-retreat with breathwork, yoga, Reiki, and sound

I occasionally offer special gatherings called Re+Center, where you are called to immerse yourself in a transformative mini-retreat designed to bring deep healing and relaxation. This unique experience combines gentle pranayama/breathwork (different than the more activating holotropic breathwork style) with restorative yoga and my intuitive hands-on Reiki to help balance your energy and reconnect with your inner self. The session ends with a sound bath, where you are enveloped in the the soothing vibrations from my crystal singing bowls, gong, drum, and other instruments. Together, the modalities of breathwork, yoga, Reiki, and sound create a holistic environment for stress relief, emotional balance, and heightened self-awareness.

Check the Events page to see if a Re+Center is coming up soon. And to be the first to know when the next Re+Center is scheduled, sign up for my newsletter (see Home page).

It has been such a privilege to work with Marti for the last couple years. My introduction to breathwork was a private session with Marti in my home. She exuded such a welcoming and calm presence from the moment we met, and I instantly felt at ease. It was a profound experience, and breathwork is now a regular part of my self-care process and healing journey. By sharing the power of breathwork with me, Marti has helped me transform the way I connect with my mind, body, and spirit, which has truly changed my life.
